  • H&LBC Day 14 Clay detox bath

How does bathing help you detox?

Your skin is responsible for eliminating 25% of the toxins in your body. It also absorbs up to 60% whatever is applied to it, this is why it is so  important to use natural, non-toxic skincare products. You absorb up to 7% of the oxygen you use through your skin!

The ingredients in detox baths both pull toxins from the skin and are also absorbed by the skin, providing minerals that support the body’s natural detox systems and overall health. That's why you must time your detox baths correctly, long enough to pull the toxins out, but not long enough to reabsorb them.

    Extremely healing, relaxing bath recipe

    • ½ cup bentonite clay This healing clay magnetically pulls toxins and heavy metals from the body.
    • ½ cup Himilayan Sea Salt: Himalayan sea salt contains 84 essential minerals that are efficiently detox the entire body. A strong himalayan salt bath (1-2 full pounds of salt per bath… that’s a lot of salt) is claimed to be the equivalent of a 3-day fast in terms of detoxification. Start slowly. Drink ALOT of water.
    • 1 cup Epsom Salts: Magnesium sulfate flushes toxins and also promotes relaxation, improves oxygen use, helps muscles and nerves function properly, and improves the absorption of nutrients.
    • 1 teaspoon vitamin C crystals: Helps neutralize the chlorine and chloramine (chlorine and ammonia; used in water treatment and can be more dangerous than just chlorine).
    • 1 cup baking soda: Baking soda helps neutralize the body’s pH. It also helps neutralize the chlorine in the water. Arm & Hammer is shown to be aluminum free in testing, you can find large bags at discount stores like Cost Co.
    • 20 drops Lavender essential oil promotes relaxation and eases tension. Juniper Oil is also nice and can help diminish appearance of cellulite.

Shower and wash your entire body thoroughly beforehand. You can also dry brush your body before showering to stimulate my body’s detox processes and shed dead skin cells so the detox bath can more easily penetrate my skin, this stimulates your lymph system.

Fill your tub with hot water, but not so hot that it makes you uncomfortable. The heat of the water opens your pores and allows for maximum toxin output. It will also make you sweat, a natural detoxification process in itself.

Dump all of the ingredients into the tub as it is filling. The clay will likely clump — this is no problem. When you get into the tub, simply try to break the clumps up. You can wet the clay and rub it onto your skin if you have areas that you would like deeper penetration of the clay.

Stay in the tub up to 30 minutes, relaxing and deep breathing, enjoying the scent of the lavender. Drink water and/or tea before, during and after this process or you will feel dehydrated. If you feel bad at any point, slowly remove yourself from the water, sit or lie down and drink water When you are done, drain the tub and rinse off. Then apply a natural moisturizer like coconut oil.

You will lose some water with this process, but that's not the point of it, because as you are losing the water through sweat and the clay is pulling toxins out of you as well. You should also feel lighter and happier after, but remember that any detox stirs up toxins in your body and it also stirs up emotions. Realize that this is part of the detoxing process, it may be helpful to journal or listen to music, nap or talk to a friend. Also, try to eat a nourishing meal with fiber, like a salad and fruit after which will further help eliminate toxins from your body!

As always, you should never detox in any capacity while pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have any medical concerns, past medical history or problems or on medication you must check with your doctor before detoxing!

  • H&L Day 13 Using tea to detox from sugar

Trying to quit sugar but you keep coming back to it? Read below and prepare to be SHOCKED!

Mark Hyman, MD has this to say about sugar "The fact is that sugar and flour are biologically addictive. The science behind it is clear and conclusive. Yet we blame the fat person for being a lazy glutton, which leads to shame and guilt. I am here to tell you it’s not your fault. Your biology has been hijacked by the food industry. They have done a hostile takeover of your taste buds, brain chemistry, hormones and metabolism. More than 300 food industry insiders spilled the beans to Michael Moss in his book, Salt, Sugar and Fat, explaining they hire “craving experts” to create the “bliss point” of junk food to create “heavy users” and increase their “stomach share.” Sugar is the new nicotine. In fact, sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine. If you are trying to use willpower to lose weight you will fail. You have to use science to unhook yourself from the addictive power of sugar, flour and hyper-processed, hyper-palatable food-like substances."

Tea cannot solve this issue alone, but it can help, a lot. Tea can provide some of the energy and good feelings that sugar gets you hooked with, and it can also provide flavors that are very pleasing so you get your mind off of the sugary foods you want to eat.

Please know that you can also be very skinny and addicted to sugar and it can make your body a breeding place for disease, because sugar is so acidic it keeps your body out of balance and strips minerals from your bones to process it.

  • H&L Day 12 Chia Seeds

    Chia Seeds help weight loss

    What are chia seeds?
Most people in the United States don't know about chia seeds, but they've actually been around for hundreds of years. The Aztecs relied on chia as a staple food and held it in such high regard that they used it for religious ceremonies and medicinal purposes, too.

    What are the health benefits?
Chia is the richest combined plant based source of Omega 3, protein and fiber. It's also rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help nourish the skin from the inside out. Apart from being great for skin regeneration, chia is extra beneficial because it helps increase energy levels, heart health, joint function and encourages a healthy digestive system. Nutritionist Vicki Edgson told us: 'Chia provides a sustained release of energy into the body. Many consumers are athletes who eat chia to improve endurance and aid joint mobility and muscle repair. It also naturally contains 37% fibre, which can aid intestinal health, including regular gut function. Diets high in fibre have been shown to reduce the risk and occurrence of colon cancer.'

How come chia is so good for healthy skin, hair and nails?
Edgson says: 'Chia contains a high source of Omega 6 LA, antioxidants (gram for gram Chia provides four times the antioxidant power of fresh blueberries) and protein which are all important for healthy skin. Studies have shown a diet containing antioxidants can slow the process of aging in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein and as the human body uses protein to build and repair tissues we need relatively large amounts. As protein is not stored in the body it is important to include it in the diet and chia is a great natural source of protein containing 20% in each serving.'

Can it help with weight loss?
'Chia seeds when eaten daily are an excellent food for supporting natural weight loss as they're a rich source of Omega 3 helps to break down and liberate stored fat,' Edgson told us. 'In addition, when added to foods chia seeds have the effect of thickening or bulking which may lead to a full sensation, this can result in you taking in fewer calories over the day and may assist with weight loss. Chia also provides a slow release of energy which can sustain you for longer.’

How much chia should you eat to get the full benefits?
A tablespoon of chia every day is recommended, but no more than that because it's very high in fibre and could cause stomach upset for more sensitive people.

    How can chia be eaten?
'Chia can be consumed in many ways,' says Edgson. 'Mix it into smoothies, sprinkle over salads or even add to bread.' The chia seeds won't change the flavour of a dish but they are a bit crunchy.

    Try this recipe:

    Green Chia Morning Smoothie

    1 mango, scooped from skin
2 Tbsp Chia Seed, soaked in 2/3 cup water for at least 15 mins
1 scoop Spirulina powder or greens powder
    1/3-1/2 cup almond milk

Blend all ingredients in a strong blender until smooth.

This can be made into a pudding by serving into ramekins, and stored in fridge until set, as the Chia will expand, and semi-solidify the other ingredients.

  • H&LBC Day 11 Mono Meal detox

    Mono Meals are healing

Mono meals, this idea that you eat just one food at a meal, might seem like a novel idea, but its a very natural and ancient practice. Humans are the only creatures on the earth that mix hard-to-digest mixtures of unhealthy, man-made food into meals containing dozens of ingredients, and even our species has only been at this peculiar habit for a few thousand years.

With less work to do digesting food, your body can focus on using that raw material for repair plus you will have more energy to spare. If you are not used to having natural energy, you may feel resistant to it and that can trigger a need to binge, to bring yourself back to "normal." In all detoxes or fasting hidden emotions locked within your cells that come out as the toxins come out. You may feel many different emotions, be prepared and just greet them as they appear. If you simply acknowledge that the emotion is present, feel it and say thank you, goodbye it often just leaves. You may experience highs and lows very close together, you need to be aware of this if you need psychological assistance dealing with your emotions.

If you want ideal digestion, internal healing and health, the key is picking a health-filled food and eating one of those foods at a time in large amounts. If you're eating in this simple manner, you're eating a mono meal.

    Examples would be:

    Large bowl of watermelon

    Several apples at once

    Smoothie made just of bananas

How can mono meals help weight loss and detoxing?

Mono Meals can help with weight loss because it helps support proper digestion (goodbye bloating!), optimal nutrient absorption, and better assimilation. All of which result in a more nourished body with more energy, a flat belly and less cravings! Mono meals can also help end the cycle of emotional eating which is usually triggered by addictive or stimulating foods & spices and plays a huge role in weight gain. But you will not get on the other side of that trigger without going through the detox and dealing with the emotions that produced that cycle to begin with, they will come out as you detox, so be prepared.

We propose only mono meals, not mono days or even longer. Foods can trigger a physiological reaction in your body over time or over a certain quantity, while mono meals can give your digestive system a rest, continuously overeating the same one food can have the opposite reaction. If you feel particularly ambitious, then have a day made up of mono meals featuring different foods.

Like all detoxes, toxins come out during the process and they produce the same effect they did when your body diluted them and locked them away, you may feel nauseous, have a headache, get angry, sad or start feeling weird. You may crave a particular substance, person or scenario- I assure you this is normal and it will pass. If you have experienced trauma, you need to work with a trained therapist and/or doctor before detoxing.

If you would like more information on the emotional-eating connection, we suggest any book by Geneen Roth

  • H&LBC Day 10 Cranberry Lemonade detox gallon challenge

    Cranberry lemonade detox water challenge

I just LOVE this fat burning drink, its amazing at cleaning out the toxins and keeping you hydrated, you can really feel all your systems working better and it keeps you full. Sometimes I mix it with Newport Skinny Tea!

    Cranberry lemonade recipe:

    • Glass gallon jar
    • Safe, clean, spring water
    • 1 cup of organic 100% cranberry juice, not from concentrate
    • 3 organic fresh lemons
    • A citrus juicer
    • Liquid stevia
    • Liquid cayenne

Fill the jar to about 85% capacity with spring water. Squeeze the lemons and pour the juice into the water. Add cranberry juice. Add stevia to taste and then add cayenne to taste. The amount of cayenne used is up to you, but the more the better.

If you don't have access to a good spring water source, use other clean drinking water that does not have fluoride. If you don't have access to organic lemons, use conventional. If there are no fresh lemons, use bottle lemon juice. If you can't get cranberry juice that is not from concentrate, get the reconstituted kind (just don't get any kind of cranberry juice that has any other ingredients like sweeteners or other juices). If you can't stand cayenne, don't use it. No glass jar? Use plastic. No excuses.

If you have powdered cayenne and/or powdered stevia, I recommend using a blender to mix some of the liquid with the powders so they don't settle later.

Here's a new challenge: the one gallon challenge. Drink a gallon of cranberry lemonade a day, sweetened with stevia, and spiced with cayenne. This is one of the best ways to detoxify, lose weight, and clean out your system. It's also a much better choice for most people than The Master Cleanse

Drinking a gallon of water a day makes an amazing difference to your health and your appearance (google gallon a day water before and after). Drinking this much fluid flushes the organs and the lymph nodes, hydrates the skin, and helps the body to rebuild cells and regenerate in ways that most people do not get to experience. The cranberry and the lemon help flush the liver and the kidneys even more, and in my experience it's a lot easier to drink a gallon of cranberry lemonade than it is to drink a gallon of plain water. And cayenne has a ton of amazing health benefits.

Please use common sense with this. If you do not follow a healthy diet with lots of produce, the amount of liquid consumed on this regimen can deplete the body of much needed minerals. Do not attempt to drink a gallon of anything in one sitting, EVER. This has been known to kill people, even with just water. If you have kidney problems, this may be the best thing for you. On the other hand, depending on your health issues, it may overload the kidneys. I find that smaller people who weigh less than 120 pounds can see the benefits at 1/2 to 1/3 of a gallon. Your health is in your hands. Again, please use good judgment and ALWAYS check with your doctor before making changes to your medication or doctor prescribed routine.
